Birthday Time!

Last weekend (April 16th) we celebrated my sister Lindsey’s 24th birthday. Birthdays (along with any sort of holiday) are a HUGE deal in my family, so it’s always a fun time. I had the day off, so I went with my mom on a birthday quest, up to Burlington. Lindsey wanted a specific watch at Target and the only locations that had said watch, were Burlington and West Seattle. My mom does not enjoy driving in Seattle (believe me, it is not a pleasant experience) so she decided Burlington would be a better choice. It was GORGEOUS out, so we had a nice drive up there.

My mom and sisters (and Kelsey’s boyfriend Gary) went to a movie. I had to pick David up at the train station, so I opted out of the movie. I stayed behind and ran over to Target to grab a few things. After picking David up, we went back to my mom’s and I decorated. It has sort of become a tradition in recent years, that I decorate the table with pictures.

We headed to Red Robin to meet everyone else for dinner. Lindsey was completely horrified over being sung to….which was funny.

The sisters

I am obsessed with pictures….I’ll admit it. David doesn’t QUITE share my love for them, but he does humor me usually. A lot of times, my attempts at getting a picture of us, result in some weird expression on his part….but it does make for some funny pictures!

Yes....he purposely looked away. Lol.

Attempt #2:

A goofy smile! I actually like this one though. It's appropriate. 🙂

Back at the house, David and Lindsey brought goofy faces to another level….

HA HA!

Apparently, Gary too wanted to get in on the goofy face action….Kelsey looks annoyed.

Grandma then showed up, and I gave her a hard time for going to Starbucks and not getting me anything!

No birthday would be complete without photo opps of the birthday person by their cake and presents!

Lindsey loved all her presents. I must say, I did really good at picking out the perfect gift. Not to sound conceited, but I do seem to have a natural gifting in that area. 🙂 It wasn’t something she asked for, but I saw it and knew she had to have it.

Socks was at the party too.

It was definitely a fun day! My mom is already gearing up for next month (Kelsey’s and David’s birthdays are only two days apart).

Yikes…..

Wow, it’s definitely been awhile since I blogged about anything of importance. I’ve been working a lot lately, and didn’t feel like sitting at the computer after getting home from a long day. Since it is now my “weekend” I will attempt to recap the past week or so of my life.

Thursday began my work week….I worked from 3 to 8, Friday from 3 to 8, Saturday from 1 to 8 (but it actually ended up being until 9….due to some customers feeling the need to take their SWEET time on their purchases….), Sunday from 11 to 6, and yesterday (Monday) from 10 until 8….THAT was a long day, let me tell you. I really do enjoy my job, which I feel is a very good thing. The weekend was crazily busy, so the time went by pretty fast. Yesterday was really slow, so the time dragged by a little more. The people I work with are hilarious, so it’s always entertaining. I will be working this particular schedule for a week or two more, then I will be working about twenty hours a week.

Friday night we went to dinner at the Macaroni Grill with some of my friends for my birthday. My friend Kendra and her boyfriend drove ALL the way from Tacoma to be there. I thought that was so sweet. I hadn’t seen Kendra since my birthday LAST year. I had never met her boyfriend, so it was fun to meet him too. They started dating right around the same time that David and I did.

Kendra and Eddie

My friends are very used to my constant photographing, so they humor me and go with it.

Me, Rachel, and Kendra

Malissa was also there. She recently got engaged (yay!!!), but I haven’t seen her since it happened, so I was excited to see her ring. It was, of course, beautiful.

Me and Malissa

And, of course, my cute David was there. 🙂

David and me

It was fun to see everybody.

Saturday was my actual birthday. I am officially twenty-seven now. It sounds weird. Someone asked today how old I am, and it felt so weird to say 27…. I had to work all day on my birthday, but when I finally got off work, David came and got me and we went to my family’s house for Mexican food….Tacos to be exact. My grandma was there, as well as my cousin Mikayla. It was fun. I got the really cute purse I wanted, the latest season of “One Tree Hill” on dvd from my sister (which I am a little ashamed to admit, that I really wanted), some earrings from my cousin, and a sweater from my grandma. Great gifts, in my opinion! I also received a bunch of money in the mail, so I got to go shopping. 🙂 I didn’t take very many pictures, but I did take some.

David and Socks (my sister's cat)

Socks is a weird cat. We love her, but she’s a little kooky sometimes. She didn’t know what to think about David. Lol.

Socks had no idea what we were doing

Grandma, Mikayla, and Lindsey

And of course, I needed a picture of David and I….he looks mad in this picture, but he really wasn’t….he likes to tease me. 🙂

We had cheesecake and watched my 5th birthday party on home video. I was really wanting to watch home movies for some reason. It was cute and funny to see everyone so much younger. We were cute kids. My dad’s video taping skills were making David motion sick, so we turned it off before the end. It was a fun birthday.

Sunday and Monday I worked all day long (from open until close) so I really don’t have anything interesting to say about those days. Let’s just say I was tired and worn out by the end!

Today was my Great Grandma’s Memorial service. The graveside service was at 11 and the service was at 1. It was good to see everyone. My sisters and I sat at a table with my aunt and uncle and cousins. My Great Grandma was a neat lady. People had a lot of funny stories to tell and a lot of touching ones as well. They had a picture display set up with pictures from throughout her life. It was neat to be able to see pictures from Norway, and also what they all looked like when they moved here from Norway. I took a picture of a picture of me and my Great Grandpa (he passed away when I was in 5th grade). I THINK this was around my 2nd birthday, because I’m wearing one of my birthday dresses. We are also wearing birthday hats, and since our birthdays were close, we usually celebrated together with the relatives (mine is January 30th, his was February 4th). I thought it was cute. It’s not the best picture, because I took it with my phone.

My great grandparents were pretty interesting people. They came from Norway and then created a whole new life here. My Great Grandpa was an amazing baker and later a carpenter, and my Great Grandma was a really good seamstress. I’ve always been really thankful that I’ve gotten to experience Norwegian traditions over the years. It’s nice to be able to celebrate (some!) of my heritage.

Lefse is a type of Norwegian dessert, that I’ve written about before….I think around Christmastime, when I made David try it. WELL, I was absolutely appalled to learn today that neither of my sisters had ever tried it….in their LIVES!!!! I can remember eating it as I little kid, I’ve always loved it. I have no idea why they didn’t eat it. They both tried it today in honor of Great Grandma though, so that was pretty funny.

It was a great celebration of her life.

When I got home, David and I went to the library for a little bit. He did some work, and I read an entire book….I know, I’m impressive.

It was a good book-one I’ve been wanting to read for awhile. I read a few other books by this author and really enjoyed them, so I decided to give this one a try. It is basically a story about a woman whose life is falling apart, and how she revisits where she’s come from to make it through. It was pretty encouraging.

After the library David took me out to dinner at a little place in Snohomish. I thought that was very sweet of him. I love unexpected little date nights.

Well, after the longest post over, I am now going to curl up and watch some more “Reba” on dvd (by the way, David bought me a couple seasons for my birthday….I was pretty excited!). Tomorrow I plan on sleeping in, reading, and just being lazy.

I’m very excited….I’m going to be working full time for the next couple weeks or so. They are doing some re-structuring at work right now, and they needed me to work full time for awhile. I whole-heartedly consented. I could definitely use some extra money right now! I’m going to have to work weekends, which I’ve never really had to do before. My “weekend” will be Tuesday and Wednesday.

I finalized my birthday dinner plans with my friends. I (finally) decided on a restaurant….Macaroni Grill. I love that restaurant and really don’t eat there very often. I figured this was the perfect opportunity. I’m glad to move away from my usual Red Robin. It’s just too crowded and noisy. It will be nice to actually be able to have coherant conversations without having to yell every five minutes when the Happy Birthday song gets screamed across the restaurant. I’m all for singing happy birthday, but does it NEED to be so loud that every single person in the restaurant has to stop their conversation or yell to be heard? I think after dinner, Red Mango may be in order. 🙂

I have to work on my birthday, but David and I will be going over to my family’s house afterwards to celebrate. It’ll be a low-key birthday, but that’s how I want it.

Hormones

Okay, so I know I’m being hormonal when AMERICAN IDOL makes me cry! I am not a person who normally cries over movies or tv shows, but for some reason tonight’s episode of American Idol got to me. It was the very end, when the final contestant made it to Hollywood, and she was SO excited. She ran out of the room and straight into her boyfriend’s arms (I’m assuming it was her boyfriend) and burst into tears. Yes, I am hormonal. I’m normally so level-headed, but during that time of the month all bets are off. I make myself laugh sometimes, I can be so ridiculous. I find myself getting all sappy, telling David I love him constantly, and always wanting to cuddle. I’ve noticed it goes one of two ways: either I get emotional and sappy or I get pissy and very easily irritated. I prefer the former, I have to say.

I worked for a little bit tonight. I always have fun at my job, so I count that as a blessing.

I’m in the process of planning a birthday dinner for myself. Nothing huge this year, I just wanted to get some friends together for dinner. My friend Kendra (I invited her boyfriend as well) is coming from Tacoma (that’s a friend!) and I haven’t seen her since my birthday LAST year. My friend Janelle and her husband and little boy are going to come too….which I am excited about. Janelle is literally my oldest friend….we’ve known each other since we were in the nursery together at church. She married her high school sweetheart and they have the cutest baby boy you’ve ever seen. I believe he’s a year and a half now. Oh, he’s adorable. Megan also said she’ll be able to make it too, which will be fun. I haven’t heard from anyone else, but honestly I would be fine if the people I listed were the only ones that came. I kind of wanted to invite the people I know I can always count on, this year….instead of every single person I know. I’ve done that before, and I ended up feeling stressed about making sure I talked to everyone. These are the people who, no matter how often I see them, I know are always there for me….and they’re just downright cool people. 🙂 I haven’t quite decided where we’re going to go yet….I’m being a little indecisive this year. It will probably end up being Red Robin again, let’s be honest. I just feel like I should be more creative….after all, that’s where I’ve gone for at least the last four birthdays in a row….and always the SAME Red Robin too. We’ll see. I’m thinking that or Claim Jumpers.

I’ve had a really busy weekend and I must say….I’m exhausted. It started at 5:30 in the morning on Saturday so I could take David to the airport. I didn’t mind getting up….I really wanted to take him. I picked him up at 6:30. After a stop at the bank and at McDonalds, we were on the road. Dropping him off at the airport was weird. Not weird in a bad way….I just realized I’m probably going to be doing that a lot. He’s safely in New York City now, having the time of his life, it sounds like. He even ran into Bruce Willis. 🙂

Saturday was also my mom’s 50th birthday. We threw a surprise birthday party for her at 1:00 so we had a lot to do before then. We had it at the Spaghetti Factory and about twenty people came. It was a success. My cousin Mikayla made a fabulous slide show, and my aunt Dawn Marie sent a birthday message from Spain. I was getting interrogated by my mom’s old boss, Bev. My sister has a big mouth and was talking about how I have a boyfriend and she knows “NOTHING about him” (which isn’t at ALL true, by the way). Bev (who I have met maybe once or twice) decided to start asking me questions about him. This was AFTER I was talking about how I’m really private and don’t like sharing things about my personal life, unless I want to. Marilyn and Ginger (whom I HAVE known for years) could tell I was uncomfortable and didn’t want to talk about it. So it was annoying to have someone I don’t even know pry into my life. I think she was thinking that my mom didn’t know anything about him, so she took it upon herself to try to get information about it for her. My mom actually knows a lot about David….she’s even met him. My SISTER doesn’t know quite as much….but she doesn’t need to. I thought it was rude and unnecessary.

The party went GREAT. My mom was really surprised and had a GREAT time. After the restaurant, my sisters needed to stop at Hallmark to get my mom cards and presents (my sister takes procrastination to a new level…). A few of my mom’s friends came over to the house for cheesecake and presents. It was a pretty great (and tiring!) day.

Today (Sunday) was full of more family time. I’m exhausted. And I miss my David. It’s only been a couple days….I think it’s just knowing that he’s so far away. I’ve been doing remarkably well….nighttime is the hardest though. Having him so far away isn’t as devestating as I thought it would be, if that makes any sense. I miss him OF COURSE, but he’s just a text message away. I assured him he doesn’t need to text me all the time. That at the very least, I just want him to tell me goodnight. He’s been texting a lot though, so that was a nice surprise. Hearing from him makes him seem closer. Technology can be so great. 🙂 Even so, I’m really looking forward to Wednesday. 🙂 I found this awesome picture of me and my monkey on my mom’s camera today. It was taken at Kelsey’s band concert back in May.

I can’t believe it’s June already! My, time flies! We have had AMAZING weather lately. It is SO warm out today, I absolutely love it. I have yet to find somewhere as beautiful as Seattle in the summertime. In fact, I doubt such a place exists. 🙂 I’m in the U-district today with David while he works at Zoka (aka our favorite coffee shop….they have free wireless internet access and awesome coffee). I walked down to the U-Village earlier to get us some bagels at Noah’s (the best place for bagels, by the way). I did a LOT of job hunting and applied to many jobs. It is my goal to get a job this week….or at least be really close to having one by the end of the week. I think it’s possible. We shall see I guess.

David’s birthday was last week and I had fun celebrating him. I made him a cake, complete with 26 candles. Cheesy? Yes, of course, but I’m sure it made him feel loved.

100_2118Not the most impressive picture. Usually I would make a layer cake, but I had just bought this pan and didn’t want to have to buy two round cake pans. This was just as yummy. The frosting is homemade fudge chocolate.

100_2117I got him a couple new shirts and a card. I wish I could have done more, but the no job thing limits my buying power a little bit. 🙂 He’s not super into “stuff” anyway, so he was totally fine with it. I could have gotten him nothing and he would have been fine, but of course I couldn’t do that. He wanted to just relax at home on his birthday, so we didn’t really do anything too exciting. Me and the birthday boy.

100_2119We celebrated with his family last night. We went to dinner at P.F. Changs. I hadn’t been there in probably at least two years. It was REALLY good! He has an awesome family and it was a lot of fun. They are genuinely nice people and I always enjoy being around them. It was a good weekend! 🙂

We had an awesome time in Snohomish the other night as well (Friday night, to be exact). I love downtown Snohomish….I think it’s the cutest ever. We met Joe and Megan down there and went to some random little hole in the wall bar and it was so much fun! They even got me to “play” pool….I am awful….but it was fun. A LOT of fun. I want to go back sometime. I tried to convince David to move back to Snohomish. 🙂 We’ll see how that goes. Lol.

All in all….fabulous weekend! 🙂 Now to get down to business…..
